“Empowering Girls and Young Women” through STEAM Education
by Jerry Song, Instructional Technology Specialist for Local District Northeast
Local District Northeast hosted a STEAM Institute on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Roy Romer Middle School in North Hollywood. With nearly 30 unique workshops to choose from, educators were engaged in classes ranging from “Neutralizing Gender Bias in the Classroom: Empowering ALL Learners” to “Building Structures and Pathways to Study Engineering at CSUN”. Over 40 schools attended and many led the workshops along with community partners such as the California Science Museum, Discovery CUBE LA, and FOSS/School Specialty. Board Member Scott Schmerelson, in support of the event, welcomed educators and participated in workshops throughout the day.
In honor of International Day of the Girl on October 11, theClassroom Workshop Interaction STEAM Institute’s theme was “Empowering Girls and Young Women.” Sara Kapadia, keynote speaker and co-founder of the STEAM Journal, an international, peer-reviewed, open-access, publication focused on the intersection of art and science, provided insight into preparing our students for an unknown future and the growing importance of context as well as content in instruction.
