Digital Citizenship Week During the week of October 17-21, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in collaboration with Common Sense Education, will participate in Digital Citizenship Week, a national movement focusing on safely maximizing the potential of online technologies for learning, creating, communicating, and collaborating. Digital citizenship also speaks to preparing our youth to become effective and conscientious leaders in a growing digital world as they prepare for college, careers, and beyond.

For Digital Citizenship Week 2016, we sponsored a showcase presentation at Griffin Avenue Elementary School, which featured a student-led performance, student-made videos, and special Disney talent guests.  The event was designed to amplify student experiences when engaging with today’s powerful technology.  This showcase event was months in the making and featured a great deal of behind-the-scenes efforts to continue to build momentum around the importance of digital citizenship for LAUSD students, parents, and staff.  In preparation for Digital Citizenship Week, comprehensive toolkits were curated to provide themed, grade-appropriate lesson plans; professional development workshops; and materials to engage parents, guardians, and caregivers.

We invite you to explore our resources, which provide a complete and comprehensive turnkey toolkit that includes:

  • Themed, grade-appropriate lesson plans about digital citizenship
  • Professional development options for every school community
  • Materials to engage parents, guardians, and caregivers

This toolkit will serve as a great resource that can be used throughout the school year as digital citizenship education is an ongoing effort. Today’s students face many challenges both on and offline that require appropriate and informed decision-making that may affect their ability to be positive contributing members of society. By educating students on digital citizenship, we are not only preparing today’s students, but we are also preparing other educators in recognizing the teaching and learning opportunities afforded by leveraging digital tools.
