Fun with a Message: Sara Coughlin Students Celebrate Digital Citizenship Week
by Julie Peng, Instructional Coach, Coughlin Elementary School
The students of Sara Coughlin Elementary School in Pacoima celebrated Digital Citizenship Week in a big way with a series of events, activities and projects designed to teach the concept of what it means to be a good digital citizen in a fun, engaging way. On Monday, October 19, students celebrated “Hairs off to being a Good Digital Citizen!” Students, teachers, and school leadership wore eccentric hairstyles as they participated in the school-wide assembly. At the assembly, students discussed the importance of staying safe online, protecting private information, balancing the time on a device and respecting themselves and others while online.
All week long students pledged to be good Digital Citizens by actively participating in the celebration. Some of the other activities included:
Tuesday: “Socks to your knees. No sharing passwords please”
Wednesday: “ Hats off to Digital Citizenship.”
Thursday: “Twin Day” – Together we are all Digital Citizens.
Friday: “Pajama Day” – Day and Night we are all Digital Citizens.
On Friday, a closing assembly highlighted Sara Coughlin’s News Team’s special report on the importance of digital citizenship at school and at home. In addition students were engaged and participated in scenarios that outlined good digital citizenship. Pledge banners made during the week served as evidence in the Multi-Purpose Room that students pledged to be respectful and responsible online. The week culminated with the deployment of the iPads to students.
This will be Sara Coughlin’s second year of participating in the district’s Instructional Technology Initiative as a one to one iPad school. As they move forward with the implementation of technology, Sara Coughlin recognizes that “Digital Citizenship” is an integral part of any successful technology integration project. The School plans to continue teaching digital citizenship throughout the year and will integrate the Common Sense Media lessons as part of their technology instruction.

Students at Coughlin incorporated videos from Common Sense Media to create a special newscast for Digital Citizenship Week. The students used a green screen and the App TouchCast to create their news report.
